Can Lisinopril Cause ED? What the Label Says
Updated Oct 19, 2026 · Written by the Mendoxa editorial team · Sources: FDA labels (via DailyMed) for Zestril, Cozaar, Norvasc, Viagra, Cialis and APOKYN, the FDA compounding Q&A, and the Mendoxa intake. See References.
Lisinopril can cause ED: Zestril (lisinopril) lists “impotence” among reactions in 1% or more of patients in controlled trials, without a separate rate. Do not stop lisinopril yourself. Sildenafil and tadalafil tablets are not contraindicated with lisinopril but add blood pressure lowering; ask a clinician to review your medicines.

Can lisinopril cause erectile dysfunction?
Yes. The Zestril (lisinopril) label includes “Urogenital: Impotence.” It appears under: “Other clinical adverse reactions occurring in 1% or higher of patients with hypertension or heart failure treated with Zestril in controlled clinical trials…”
That is not a separate ED rate. The Zestril (lisinopril) label gives neither an impotence-specific percentage nor an impotence-specific comparison with placebo. Its reported differences from placebo in hypertension trials are for headache (by 3.8%), dizziness (by 3.5%) and cough (by 2.5%). Those figures do not measure ED.
The lisinopril label records a reported reaction; it does not establish the cause of your own symptoms. Tell your blood pressure prescriber when ED started and which medicines you take. Do not stop lisinopril or change its dose on your own.
For the broader topic, read ED and blood pressure medicines. This guide focuses on what the lisinopril label actually reports.

What blood pressure labels say about ED
The entries below use different terms and frequency descriptions. Read the wording alongside its context: lisinopril, losartan and amlodipine do not have a shared ED rate that can be ranked from these entries.
| Medicine and class | Label section | Exact wording | How frequency is framed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zestril (lisinopril) ACE inhibitor | Adverse Reactions → clinical trials → Urogenital | “Urogenital: Impotence.” | Within reactions occurring in “1% or higher” of patients in controlled trials; no separate impotence rate. |
| Cozaar (losartan) ARB | Adverse Reactions → less common adverse reactions → Reproductive system and breast disorders | “Reproductive system and breast disorders: Impotence.” | “Less common adverse reactions”; no numerical impotence rate in this entry. |
| Norvasc (amlodipine) Calcium channel blocker | Adverse Reactions → Psychiatric | “sexual dysfunction (male and female)” | Events in “<1% but >0.1%” where “a causal relationship is uncertain”. |
Sources: DailyMed labels for Zestril (lisinopril), Cozaar (losartan) and Norvasc (amlodipine); accessed Oct 19, 2026.
Does this make losartan a better choice for ED? The losartan and lisinopril label entries alone do not answer that question. Do not switch blood pressure medicines yourself; bring your concerns to the prescriber who manages them.
Can you take ED medication with lisinopril?
Lisinopril is not listed as a contraindication for Viagra (sildenafil) or Cialis (tadalafil), but these tablets can add to blood pressure lowering with antihypertensives. A clinician should review your medicines before prescribing.
Nitrates are different: they are contraindicated with sildenafil and tadalafil. Tell the clinician about any nitrate use; see ED medication and nitrates.
| ED tablet studied | Blood pressure medicine | Mean extra drop, systolic / diastolic (mmHg) | Measurement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viagra (sildenafil) 100 mg | Amlodipine 5–10 mg (patients with hypertension) | 8 / 7 | Supine |
| Cialis (tadalafil) 10 mg | Enalapril (ACE inhibitor) | 4 / 1 | Supine, versus placebo |
| Cialis (tadalafil) 10 mg | Amlodipine | 3 / 2 | Supine, versus placebo |
| Cialis (tadalafil) 10 mg | Metoprolol | 5 / 3 | Supine, versus placebo |
| Cialis (tadalafil) 10 mg | Bendrofluazide | 6 / 4 | Supine, versus placebo |
| Cialis (tadalafil) 20 mg | Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) | 8 / 4 | Ambulatory |
Sources: DailyMed Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label; accessed Oct 19, 2026.
No row measures lisinopril itself. Enalapril is an ACE inhibitor, the same class as lisinopril; the enalapril result in the tadalafil label is not a lisinopril-specific estimate. The ARB result is ambulatory, while the other rows report supine measurements. In a similar study with tadalafil 20 mg, the Cialis (tadalafil) label reports no clinically significant differences between tadalafil and placebo in people taking amlodipine. These label results do not predict your personal blood pressure drop.

Before your ED visit
Have this information ready so the clinician can review your medicines and your concerns:
- Medicine list: all blood pressure medicines and doses, plus other prescriptions and supplements.
- Nitrate use: identify any nitrates before treatment is considered; sildenafil and tadalafil labels contraindicate the combination.
- Alpha-blockers: include these in your list for the clinician’s review of sildenafil and tadalafil.
- Home blood pressure readings: bring any you already have.
- Symptoms and timing: note when ED started and any dizziness. The lisinopril label lists dizziness among reported reactions.
Continue lisinopril as prescribed while you discuss your concerns with your blood pressure prescriber. The Zestril (lisinopril) label is the source for the adverse-reaction information above.
How Mendoxa handles blood pressure medicines
Start an online visit and provide your medicine list, doses, readings and symptoms. An independent licensed provider reviews your medicines and decides whether ED treatment is appropriate. A prescription is required; starting the visit does not mean a prescription will be issued.
Tell the provider that you take lisinopril. The sildenafil and tadalafil labels describe additional blood pressure lowering with antihypertensives, so your blood pressure medicines belong in that review.
Mendoxa offers a compounded rapid-dissolve tablet containing sildenafil, tadalafil and apomorphine. FDA: compounded medicines are not FDA-approved. The sildenafil, tadalafil and APOKYN (apomorphine) labels are ingredient references, not FDA approval of Mendoxa’s combination tablet.

FAQ
Does lisinopril cause ED or impotence?
Yes, it is a listed reaction: the Zestril (lisinopril) label includes “Impotence” among reactions occurring in 1% or more of patients in controlled trials. It gives no separate impotence rate or placebo comparison.
Should I stop lisinopril if I have ED?
No. Do not stop lisinopril or change your dose on your own. Tell your prescriber when ED started; the Zestril (lisinopril) label lists impotence, but does not establish what caused your symptoms.
Can I take Viagra with lisinopril?
Lisinopril is not a listed contraindication in the Viagra (sildenafil) label, but sildenafil may further lower blood pressure with antihypertensives. Nitrates are contraindicated. Have a clinician review your medicines first.
Can I take Cialis with lisinopril?
Lisinopril is not a listed contraindication in the Cialis (tadalafil) label, but tadalafil adds blood pressure lowering. Its enalapril result is not a lisinopril-specific measurement. Nitrates are contraindicated; a clinician should review your medicines first.
Is losartan better than lisinopril for ED?
These label entries do not establish that. The Cozaar (losartan) label lists impotence among “less common adverse reactions”; the Zestril (lisinopril) label includes it among reactions in 1% or more of patients. Ask your prescriber about your concerns; do not switch medicines yourself.
Does amlodipine cause ED?
The Norvasc (amlodipine) label lists “sexual dysfunction (male and female)” among events in <1% but >0.1% of patients, where a causal relationship is uncertain. That wording does not establish that amlodipine caused your ED. Discuss symptoms with your prescriber.
