ED and alcohol: how drinking affects your erections

Alcohol can cause temporary erection problems because it slows the nervous system and dulls arousal. A drink or two may not matter, but heavier drinking often does. Long-term heavy drinking can harm hormones, nerves and blood vessels and lead to lasting erectile dysfunction. Alcohol also raises side effects of ED medication.

Does alcohol cause ED?

In the short term, drinking can make erections harder to get and keep. Over the long term, heavy drinking is linked to lasting ED.

Mayo Clinic lists alcohol use among the lifestyle factors tied to ED. How much is too much varies from person to person, so we do not give a fixed number. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism explains what counts as a standard drink.

What happens on a night of drinking

Alcohol is a depressant. It slows the signals between brain and penis and can make orgasm harder too.

Dehydration and tiredness add to it, and a bad night can lower morning erections the next day. It can also set off the anxiety loop the next time, which we cover in performance anxiety and ED. This happens to plenty of men and says nothing about your worth.

Long-term heavy drinking and erections

Years of heavy drinking can lower testosterone, damage nerves and harm the liver and blood vessels, all of which affect erections.

Cutting back can help, though no one can promise full recovery. If cutting back is hard, the SAMHSA National Helpline is free, confidential and open every day at 1-800-662-4357 (checked 2026-10-16).

Alcohol and ED medication

Alcohol and PDE5 inhibitors both lower blood pressure, so together they can cause dizziness, headache or fainting. Heavy drinking also makes the medication less effective.

Follow your clinician's advice on alcohol and tell them honestly how much you drink. Never combine PDE5 inhibitors with nitrates or "poppers" (amyl nitrite). Read more in our guide to sildenafil safety.

What to try

Drinking less before sex is the simplest fix. If problems continue when you are sober, it is worth a clinical review.

Pace your drinks, drink water, and eat. Notice whether ED also happens when you have not been drinking, and protect your sleep. For more on staying with an erection, see losing an erection during sex.

When to talk to a clinician

If you have ED even without drinking, or you are drinking more than you want to, talk to a clinician.

Mendoxa offers an online ED review in 49 states (not California), with licensed LocumTele clinicians. A prescription is never automatic.

The only drink line we opened

We did not open a study that says a set number of drinks causes ED. The Cialis label does print an alcohol line. That is the number on this page.
