Why you go soft after you come
Softening after you come is the usual recovery response. During the refractory period, further erections and ejaculation are inhibited (Levin’s 2009 review; ISSM). A slower second round by itself does not establish ED: NIDDK defines ED as difficulty getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex.
There is no single normal countdown. ISSM describes a few minutes for some younger men, sometimes 12 to 24 hours for older men, and a few days for some men. Those are broad descriptions, not age targets: Levin’s 2009 review found no published data supporting the commonly repeated age relationship.
Start with when the problem happens: after ejaculation, use the decision guide below; before ejaculation, see losing an erection during sex or why you can’t stay hard. For duration questions, read how long an erection should last.
Normal recovery, ED or PE? Choose your next step
Match what happens to you with the right next step. A normal refractory period needs no treatment; losing firmness before you come or coming too soon may be worth an assessment.
| What happens to you | Likely category | Starting point | What to discuss |
|---|---|---|---|
| You come, soften, and need minutes to hours before another erection | Refractory period, a normal recovery phase (ISSM) | Intimacy while you wait; patience and time | If the pattern has changed or worries you, describe it to a clinician |
| You lose firmness before you come, or can’t get firm enough for sex | Possible ED (NIDDK definition) | Losing an erection during sex; can’t stay hard | Causes such as health conditions and medicines (NIDDK) |
| You repeatedly come earlier than you want, cannot delay it and feel distressed | Possible PE (ISSM definition) | Cialis and premature ejaculation | Timing, control and distress; the Cialis (tadalafil) label does not list PE as a use |

If the ED row fits, start with an online assessment. Before your visit, note whether firmness fades before or after ejaculation, whether it happens repeatedly, and which medicines and supplements you use. Independent licensed providers assess whether treatment is appropriate. Prescription required. See ED medication options to prepare your questions.
What affects the refractory period: the evidence
The physiology is still unsettled. This table separates observed findings from practical claims the research cannot support (Levin’s 2009 review).
| Factor | What the source says | What it cannot tell you | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Age | Younger men may need a few minutes; older men usually longer, sometimes 12 to 24 hours; for some men a few days. | A 2009 review found that the common age claim “has no published support data.” | ISSM; Levin, J Sex Med 2009 |
| Testosterone and potency | ISSM says recovery time is not related to potency or testosterone levels. | Why it varies so much between men is not known. | ISSM |
| Prolactin | A study linked post-orgasm prolactin increases with sexual satiety. | Levin’s review rejected prolactin as a major factor in refractory time; the hormone finding does not establish a way to control recovery. | Brody and Krüger, Biol Psychol 2006; Levin 2009 |
| Sildenafil (Viagra) | Two small trials reported shorter recovery time; a third lab study did not (details below). See the Viagra (sildenafil) label. | Healthy volunteers, single doses; not a labeled use. | Aversa 2000; Mondaini 2003; Ekmekçioğlu 2005 |
| Premature ejaculation (PE) | PE involves early ejaculation, difficulty delaying it and distress; it concerns what happens before recovery begins. | A long refractory period alone is not PE. | Levin 2009; ISSM PE definition, 2014 |
| Oxytocin physiology | A review describes oxytocin as involved in ejaculation, softening afterward and the post-orgasm refractory period. | It does not provide a recovery-time target or a proven self-help method. | Oxytocin and male sexual function · PubMed review |
Sources: linked in each row; PubMed abstracts and ISSM. Accessed Oct 31, 2026.
Use this evidence to set expectations: hormone explanations and small drug studies do not give you a dependable deadline for round two.
Does Viagra keep you hard after you come?
Viagra is not labeled to keep you hard after ejaculation or shorten recovery. The Viagra (sildenafil) label says sexual stimulation is required; it may be taken 30 minutes to 4 hours before sex, and one study found an erection response up to 4 hours that was weaker than at 2 hours. Those time windows describe the opportunity for an erection with stimulation, not a continuous erection.
Three small studies in men without ED tested refractory time directly, with mixed results:
| Study · design | Who and what | Refractory-time result | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aversa et al. 2000 · randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover | 20 healthy men, single 100 mg sildenafil dose vs placebo (separate product label: Viagra (sildenafil) label) | 10.8 min on placebo vs 2.6 min on sildenafil (P < 0.0001), with continuous erotic stimulation | Erection measures themselves did not change; lab setting; men without ED |
| Mondaini et al. 2003 · randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled home study | 60 healthy men aged 20–40 without ED, single 25 mg sildenafil dose vs placebo (Viagra (sildenafil) label) | 12 of 30 on sildenafil vs 4 of 30 on placebo reported a shorter refractory time (P = 0.04) | Self-report; authors call it a “limited single-dose home study”; no better erections than placebo |
| Ekmekçioğlu et al. 2005 · two double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover lab studies | 60 healthy volunteers across two studies; refractory-time experiment: 30 men, sildenafil vs placebo (Viagra (sildenafil) label) | Placebo vs sildenafil: time to best tip rigidity after ejaculation 19.10 vs 15.66 min, not significant (P = 0.242); authors “did not show” a shorter refractory period | Lab vibratory stimulation; healthy men |
Sources: Aversa et al., Hum Reprod 2000; Mondaini et al., Int J Impot Res 2003; Ekmekçioğlu et al., Urology 2005; Viagra (sildenafil) label. Accessed Oct 31, 2026.
This is mixed evidence in healthy volunteers, not a prediction for your next round. The 2003 authors advised against using sildenafil to improve erections in healthy young men (Mondaini abstract; Viagra (sildenafil) label). For ED treatment timing, see how long Viagra lasts and the sildenafil guide.
Does Cialis keep you hard after you come?
Cialis is not labeled to keep you continuously hard after you come. The Cialis (tadalafil) label reports improved erectile function compared with placebo up to 36 hours after as-needed dosing, requires sexual stimulation, and gives a mean terminal half-life of 17.5 hours in healthy subjects. A longer treatment window does not establish a shorter refractory period.
The Cialis (tadalafil) label makes no refractory-period claim; the trials summarized above studied sildenafil, not tadalafil (Viagra (sildenafil) label). For the treatment-window comparison, see sildenafil vs tadalafil and how long Cialis lasts.
What to do while waiting for round two
Make the wait useful without treating it as a performance test. Medical News Today notes that evidence behind anecdotal recovery strategies is limited.
- Keep intimacy going if you both want to. The sex therapist answering WebMD’s reader question suggests kissing, massage and caressing; sex toys are another option for a partner who wants more stimulation.
- Address general erection health. NIDDK lists too much alcohol, smoking and insufficient physical activity among contributors to ED. Read ED and alcohol and exercise for ED; these concern erection health rather than a proven shortcut through recovery.
- Be realistic about pelvic floor exercises. Medical News Today says research has not shown that they shorten the refractory period.
If your concern is firmness before ejaculation, use how to get harder erections. The distinction matters when you describe the problem during an online visit.
Safety checks before ED medication
- Sildenafil and tadalafil are contraindicated with organic nitrates or riociguat (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- An erection lasting more than 4 hours needs immediate medical care (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- Stop and seek care for sudden vision loss or sudden decrease or loss of hearing (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- Common adverse effects include headache and flushing with sildenafil, and headache, indigestion and back pain with tadalafil (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- The APOKYN (apomorphine) label contraindicates use with 5HT3 antagonists such as ondansetron and warns about nausea and fainting.
Do not take extra doses to try for another round: both labels set a maximum of once per day (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label). Do not add another ED medicine on your own; see Cialis and Viagra together, priapism and ED medication and nitrates.

FAQ
Does Viagra keep you hard after you come?
Its label does not make that claim: sildenafil requires sexual stimulation (Viagra (sildenafil) label). Small trials in men without ED reported mixed recovery-time results; see the dated study table above.
Does Cialis keep you hard after you come?
The Cialis (tadalafil) label requires sexual stimulation and reports improved erectile function up to 36 hours after as-needed dosing. That window does not mean a continuous erection or establish shorter recovery after ejaculation.
What is the refractory period?
It is the recovery phase after ejaculation when further erections and ejaculation are inhibited (Levin’s 2009 review). Recovery varies; ISSM describes anything from a few minutes to a few days, depending on the person.
How to stay hard longer naturally?
For the wait after ejaculation, WebMD’s sex therapist suggests kissing, caressing and massage rather than immediately trying for penetration (WebMD). For firmness before ejaculation, NIDDK identifies smoking, excessive alcohol and inactivity as contributors to ED (NIDDK). Neither point establishes a way to bypass the refractory period.
What is the main cause of erectile dysfunction?
There is no single cause for everyone. Conditions affecting blood vessels, nerves or hormones, as well as emotional factors and lifestyle behaviors, can contribute (NIDDK). Softening only after ejaculation is a different pattern; use the decision guide above.
What vitamins help with erections?
The sources checked here do not support recommending a vitamin to stay hard after ejaculation. NIH’s MedlinePlus says herbs and dietary supplements marketed for ED have not been proven effective. Ask a clinician about persistent erection difficulties instead of choosing a supplement for round two.
