How long can the average man stay erect?
The familiar “average” answers a different question. The 2005 study timed intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT): the interval from vaginal penetration to ejaculation, rather than an erection from beginning to end.
Its abstract reports “a median IELT of 5.4 minutes (range, 0.55-44.1 minutes).” That result describes the study sample; it does not establish a minimum or an ideal duration for you (PubMed abstract).
Which problem are you trying to solve? Difficulty staying firm belongs in an ED assessment (NIDDK); difficulty delaying ejaculation is a separate question (ISSM definition). If staying firm is the issue, use the online visit above to describe what happens rather than trying to reach a minute count.
What the studies measured, and what they found
Read the measurement before comparing the result with your experience. These studies cover intercourse timing, sleep erections and a diagnostic definition—not interchangeable measures of erection length.
| Study and year | What was measured | Result | What it cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waldinger et al. · 2005 · 500 couples, 5 countries | Stopwatch-timed minutes from penetration to ejaculation (IELT) over 4 weeks; Netherlands, UK, Spain, Turkey, US | Median 5.4 minutes (range 0.55–44.1); 6.5 minutes at ages 18–30 vs 4.3 minutes over age 51. PubMed abstract | Time to ejaculation, not total time erect; one sample of men in stable relationships |
| Waldinger et al. · 2009 · 474 men, same 5 countries | Same measure with a blinded timer device instead of a stopwatch | Median 6.0 minutes (range 0.1–52.1); PubMed abstract | An observed range is not a safety range or a diagnostic cutoff |
| Hatzichristou et al. · 1998 · 12 healthy men aged 21–24 | Nighttime erections recorded with a rigidity monitor over 3 sessions of 3 nights | Every 3-night recording included an episode above 60% tip rigidity lasting more than 10 minutes. PubMed abstract | Small lab sample; cannot establish an average number or duration of nighttime erections for all men |
| ISSM definition · 2014 · expert committee | Definition of premature ejaculation (PE) | About 1 minute or less from the first sexual experience (lifelong PE), or a bothersome drop often to about 3 minutes or less (acquired PE), plus poor control and distress. PubMed abstract | Timing alone does not make a diagnosis; distress and control count too |

When to worry: too short, too fast or too long
Separate firmness, ejaculation and a persistent erection. Choose the description that matches your concern; the next step differs.
| What happens | What it may point to | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Erections are not firm enough, or do not last long enough, for sex on a regular basis | Erectile dysfunction: trouble “getting or keeping an erection that is firm enough for sex” (NIDDK) | Check the ED symptoms; a clinician can look for causes and discuss treatment |
| Ejaculation is consistently earlier than you want, with poor control and distress | Possible premature ejaculation, using the ISSM definition | Raise ejaculation timing separately at your visit; see Cialis and premature ejaculation (Cialis (tadalafil) label) |
| You lose the erection partway through, but not every time | Stress, anxiety and excessive alcohol use are listed ED factors (NIDDK) | See losing an erection during sex and can’t stay hard |
| An erection lasts more than 4 hours, painful or not | Possible priapism; the Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label say to seek immediate or emergency medical help | Go to an emergency room now; read priapism later |
Sources: NIDDK definition of ED; NIDDK causes; ISSM 2014; Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label. Accessed Oct 30, 2026.
An erection lasting too long: seek care
Do not wait for pain. An erection lasting more than 4 hours needs emergency care, painful or not; untreated priapism can damage erectile tissue (Cialis (tadalafil) label). Seek care now rather than starting an online ED visit; our priapism guide explains the condition.
How to stay erect longer: what the evidence supports
Start with the cause of the difficulty. NIDDK includes lifestyle changes, counseling and prescription medicines among ED treatments; the aim is reliable firmness, not a longer stopwatch result.
- Get recurring difficulty assessed. Sildenafil and tadalafil treat ED and require sexual stimulation; discuss suitability with a prescriber (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- Be physically active. NIDDK cites at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week (NIDDK); our exercise for ED guide explains where to begin.
- Ask about guided pelvic floor training. A randomized study of 55 men tested physiotherapist-taught exercises with biofeedback and lifestyle changes; after 6 months, 40% had regained normal erectile function and 35.5% had improved (Dorey 2005). This was a supported program, not proof that exercises alone will work for everyone.
- Limit alcohol. Limiting or stopping alcohol is among NIDDK’s lifestyle steps; read ED and alcohol.
- Address anxiety and stress. Counseling can help reduce anxiety about sex (NIDDK); see performance anxiety and ED.
How to stay erect longer without pills? Start with activity, alcohol habits and support for anxiety, and ask whether guided pelvic floor training fits your situation (NIDDK treatment; pelvic floor study). If keeping an erection remains difficult, describe the pattern to a clinician instead of setting a duration target.
Medicine duration is a separate question from continuous erection length: see how long Viagra lasts and how long Cialis lasts (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).

What each path includes
Use your main concern to choose the next step. For recurring difficulty staying firm, an assessment gives you a place to discuss both health factors and treatment preferences.
| Your goal | Starting point | What it includes | Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stay firm longer with lifestyle steps | NIDDK lifestyle advice and exercise for ED | More physical activity, limiting alcohol, quitting smoking, a healthy weight; pelvic floor exercises | Does not replace assessment of recurring difficulty |
| Work on anxiety about performance | Counseling (NIDDK) and performance anxiety and ED | Help to lower anxiety and stress about sex; a partner may join sessions | Not a medicine; can be combined with ED care |
| Get recurring ED assessed | In-person clinician (NIDDK diagnosis) | History, medicine review, exam and tests as needed, which may include a nighttime erection test | A visit, not a treatment by itself |
| Discuss an FDA-approved ED tablet | Prescriber; Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label | Sildenafil or tadalafil if suitable for your heart health and medicines | Prescription required; sexual stimulation is still needed |
| Ask whether the Mendoxa tablet fits | Mendoxa online visit | Independent licensed providers review your health information and decide whether prescription treatment is appropriate | Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved; APOKYN (apomorphine) label |
Sources: NIDDK treatment; NIDDK diagnosis; Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label; APOKYN (apomorphine) label; FDA compounding Q&A; Mendoxa ED care. Accessed Oct 30, 2026.

Safety checks before ED medication
- Sildenafil and tadalafil are contraindicated with organic nitrates or riociguat (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- Stop and seek care for sudden vision loss or sudden decrease or loss of hearing (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- Common adverse effects include headache and flushing with sildenafil, and headache, indigestion and back pain with tadalafil (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- The APOKYN (apomorphine) label contraindicates use with 5HT3 antagonists such as ondansetron and warns about nausea and fainting.
Do not add another ED medicine on your own: the Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label say combinations with other PDE5 inhibitors have not been studied and advise against them. See ED medication and nitrates.
If erections are too short for sex
Tell the provider what “not long enough” means for you. Note whether you struggle to get firm, lose firmness before finishing, or finish sooner than you want; include when it began, your health history and your current medicine list. Independent licensed providers assess whether treatment is appropriate. Prescription required.
Mendoxa offers a compounded rapid-dissolve tablet containing sildenafil, tadalafil and apomorphine. It is not FDA-approved. The Viagra (sildenafil) label, Cialis (tadalafil) label and APOKYN (apomorphine) label concern separate products; they do not establish the safety or effectiveness of this combination.
Use the online visit to ask about suitability, the compounded formulation and cost before deciding. The table below shows the available quantities and totals if prescribed.

FAQ
How long can the average man stay erect?
There is no established single average for total time erect in the studies cited here. The familiar 5.4-minute figure measures penetration to ejaculation (Waldinger 2005), not the whole erection.
Is lasting 5 minutes normal?
Five minutes from penetration to ejaculation is close to the study median, but that does not diagnose your situation (Waldinger 2005). If you mean losing firmness after five minutes, focus on whether it prevents sex; read why you can’t stay hard (NIDDK definition of ED).
How long is too long for an erection?
More than 4 hours, painful or not, needs emergency care. The Cialis (tadalafil) label warns that untreated priapism can permanently damage erectile tissue.
How can I stay erect longer without pills?
NIDDK includes physical activity, limiting alcohol, stopping smoking and counseling for anxiety in ED care. A pelvic floor trial tested exercises with biofeedback and lifestyle support. These are options to discuss, not promises of a specific erection length; see exercise for ED.
Why do I lose my erection before finishing?
Stress, anxiety, alcohol, some medicines and blood-vessel conditions can all play a part (NIDDK). If it happens often, it may be ED and is worth an assessment. See losing an erection during sex for help describing the pattern.
Do erections get shorter with age?
The 2005 study found shorter median times to ejaculation in older participants, but it did not measure total erection length. Do not use that age comparison to dismiss recurring difficulty staying firm; discuss it with a clinician (NIDDK).

How we wrote this
Written by the Mendoxa editorial team · Sources: DailyMed/FDA. Medical facts on this page come from the FDA-approved labels on DailyMed and Drugs@FDA; each drug name links to its label. We checked the linked PubMed abstracts, NIH guidance and DailyMed/FDA sources on Oct 30, 2026. Study dates and measurements appear together so intercourse timing is not mistaken for total erection duration. The Viagra (sildenafil) label, Cialis (tadalafil) label and APOKYN (apomorphine) label describe separate products; they do not establish the safety or effectiveness of the compounded combination. The APOKYN label concerns an injection for Parkinson’s disease.
