Foods that help ED: the eating pattern with evidence
NIDDK states: “Research shows that a healthy diet can lower the risk of developing erectile dysfunction (ED) and improve ED symptoms.” Mediterranean-style eating is one pattern it recommends.
The foods NIDDK lists as healthy choices:
- vegetables, such as cabbage, leafy greens, and beets
- fruits, such as apples, berries, kiwifruit, and oranges
- legumes, such as lentils, beans, and peas
- unsaturated fats from nuts, seeds, and fatty fish
- whole-grain foods, such as oats, brown rice, and quinoa
These choices also fit a diet aimed at reducing risks related to diabetes, heart disease and obesity (NIDDK). Read about ED and diabetes and ED and blood pressure.
Put the food list into a meal
For example, try oats with berries and nuts; lentils with brown rice and greens; or fish with vegetables. These are ways to combine the foods above, not tested meals for firmer erections. Pick a change you can repeat rather than adding a special juice before sex.
Foods for stronger erections: evidence and limits
Look for an erection outcome, not just a blood-flow theory. A cohort follows eating habits and outcomes without assigning diets; it cannot prove cause and effect. A small uncontrolled study cannot separate a food effect from expectation or other changes.
| Food or pattern | Proposed mechanism | Human evidence for ED | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mediterranean-style diet | Overall diet quality and vascular risk factors | Cohort of 21,469 US men: highest vs lowest Mediterranean Diet score in men under 60, “HR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.66-0.92” for new ED; weaker in older men. Association, not a trial. Bauer et al. 2020 | JAMA Netw Open · PMID 33185675 |
| Calorie reduction plus exercise (obese men) | Weight loss, inflammation and blood-vessel function | Randomized trial, 110 obese men with ED, 2 years: mean IIEF score 13.9 → 17 with the program vs 13.5 → 13.6 in controls; improvement “in about one third” of men. Diet and activity together, not a single food. Esposito et al. 2004 | JAMA · PMID 15213209 |
| Flavonoid-rich fruit (berries, citrus, apples) | Flavonoids (anthocyanins, flavanones, flavones) and vascular health | Cohort of 25,096 men: higher total fruit intake “was associated with a 14% reduction in risk of ED”; subclass links seen only in men under 70. Intervention trials are needed. Cassidy et al. 2016 | Am J Clin Nutr · PMID 26762373 |
| Nuts and pistachios | Arginine, unsaturated fats and lipids | 17 men ate 100 g pistachios daily for 3 weeks with no control group; IIEF-15 rose from 36 to 54.2 (Aldemir et al. 2011). A secondary analysis of a 14-week randomized trial included 83 healthy men (60 g/day mixed nuts): desire and orgasm scores improved, but these findings do not establish treatment of ED; nitric oxide markers did not differ (FERTINUTS 2019). | PMID 21228801; PMID 31248067 |
| Pomegranate juice | Antioxidants | Crossover randomized trial, 53 men with mild to moderate ED: “overall statistical significance was not achieved” (P=0.058). Forest et al. 2007 | Int J Impot Res · PMID 17568759 |
| Beets and beet juice | Dietary nitrate converted to nitrite and nitric oxide | No human ED trial identified in the sources checked. A review reports beetroot juice raised plasma nitrite, a nitric oxide marker, not erection outcomes. J Prev Med Hyg 2022 review | PMID 36479475; PubMed search Oct 28, 2026 |
| Watermelon | L-citrulline, an L-arginine precursor | The cited trial tested a supplement, not watermelon. A citrulline supplement (24 men with mild ED, single-blind) improved hardness scores in some men; the authors call it “less effective than phosphodiesterase type-5 enzyme inhibitors”. Cormio et al. 2011 | Urology · PMID 21195829; PubMed search Oct 28, 2026 |
| Leafy greens and vegetables | Part of an overall healthy eating pattern | NIDDK includes leafy greens among healthy choices for ED; this guidance does not establish an immediate erection effect from a serving. | NIDDK eating and diet |
| Dark chocolate | Cocoa flavanols | A randomized cocoa/chocolate trial measured blood-vessel function and blood pressure, not erections. No human ED trial identified in the sources checked. | Faridi 2008 · PMID 18614724; search Oct 28, 2026 |
Sources: Bauer 2020; Esposito 2004; Cassidy 2016; Aldemir 2011; Salas-Huetos 2019; Forest 2007; beetroot review 2022; Cormio 2011; Faridi 2008; targeted PubMed searches for beet, watermelon and cocoa with erectile. Accessed Oct 28, 2026.
What to take from this: use the overall eating pattern as your starting point. The pistachio quantity is a study exposure, not a serving recommendation; the fruit finding is an association, not a promise of a stronger erection.
Beet juice and erectile dysfunction: what PubMed shows
Beet juice has a plausible mechanism, but the review cited here does not establish that it treats ED. The 2022 review describes increases in plasma nitrite after beetroot juice. That blood marker is not an erection outcome, and it does not establish how much juice to drink or when it would help.
Beets fit the NIDDK healthy-food list. Treat them as a food choice rather than a substitute for assessment. Our nitric oxide and ED guide explains the pathway.
The citrulline study tested a supplement in men with mild ED, not watermelon. Its results do not establish a watermelon serving or a pre-sex eating schedule. See supplements for ED before treating a food ingredient as a treatment.
Foods and ED pills: what to avoid
A high-fat meal can delay sildenafil absorption (Viagra (sildenafil) label); grapefruit juice would likely increase tadalafil exposure (Cialis (tadalafil) label). The details below concern these labeled products, not the timing of a compounded combination.
| Food or drink | Viagra (sildenafil) label | Cialis (tadalafil) label |
|---|---|---|
| High-fat meal | Sildenafil: “the rate of absorption is reduced, with a mean delay in T max of 60 minutes and a mean reduction in C max of 29%” (Viagra (sildenafil) label) | Tadalafil: absorption “not influenced by food” (Cialis (tadalafil) label) |
| Grapefruit juice | Not mentioned in the Viagra (sildenafil) label; it lists other CYP3A4 inhibitors that raise sildenafil levels | Listed with erythromycin and itraconazole as CYP3A4 inhibitors that “would likely increase tadalafil exposure” (Cialis (tadalafil) label) |
| Alcohol | A limited healthy-volunteer study did not show added blood-pressure lowering; this does not establish a safe drinking amount for you (Viagra (sildenafil) label) | About 5 units or more can increase dizziness, headache, faster heart rate and lower standing blood pressure (Cialis (tadalafil) label) |
Sources: Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label. Accessed Oct 28, 2026.
In plain terms, the Viagra (sildenafil) label says that after a high-fat meal “such as a cheeseburger and french fries” it “may take a little longer to start working.” Read more on ED and alcohol and dehydration and ED.
What each path includes
Diet and treatment answer different questions. Use the paths below to plan the conversation; you can follow more than one.
| Your goal | Starting point | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Lower long-term ED risk with diet | NIDDK food lists; a registered dietitian | Vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, fish and whole grains; less saturated fat, refined carbs, sodium, added sugar and alcohol. Build repeatable habits; the sources do not establish an individual response time. |
| Find out why erections changed | Clinical assessment | Blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, medicines and mood: NIDDK lists vascular disease, diabetes and anxiety among ED causes. |
| Firmer erections for planned sex | Online visit or in-person clinician; Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label | Which prescription fits your health and current medicines. Prescription required. |
| Check whether Mendoxa fits | Mendoxa online assessment | Independent licensed providers assess suitability; the compounded tablet is not FDA-approved. |

Diet and prescription treatment: different timelines
Diet is a longer-term strategy, not a reliable change for tonight. The lifestyle trial assessed diet plus exercise over 2 years. It does not establish how soon one person will notice a change from food alone.
Prescription tablets work on a different clock. The Viagra (sildenafil) label says to take it about 1 hour before sexual activity, within a 30-minute to 4-hour window; the Cialis (tadalafil) label reports improved erectile function compared with placebo up to 36 hours after an as-needed dose. Both require sexual stimulation.
You can improve your eating habits while discussing treatment. NIDDK treatment guidance includes lifestyle changes and prescription care. Use our guide to getting harder erections to prepare for that conversation.
Safety checks before ED medication
- Sildenafil and tadalafil are contraindicated with organic nitrates or riociguat (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- An erection lasting more than 4 hours needs immediate medical care (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- Stop and seek care for sudden vision loss or sudden decrease or loss of hearing (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- Common adverse effects include headache and flushing with sildenafil, and headache, indigestion and back pain with tadalafil (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- The APOKYN (apomorphine) label contraindicates use with 5HT3 antagonists such as ondansetron and warns about nausea and fainting.
Give the prescriber your full medicine and supplement list. Do not add another ED medicine on your own: the Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label say combinations with other PDE5 inhibitors or ED therapies have not been studied. See ED medication and nitrates.
Make your next step an ED assessment
Do not wait for a particular food to fix the problem before asking for help. Start the Mendoxa online ED visit to discuss your symptoms and treatment suitability. Independent licensed providers assess suitability. Prescription required.
The tablet combines sildenafil, tadalafil and apomorphine; it is not FDA-approved. Ingredient references are the Viagra (sildenafil) label, Cialis (tadalafil) label and APOKYN (apomorphine) label; APOKYN is an injectable Parkinson’s treatment, and its label is not approval of this ED combination.
Bring your current medicines, supplements and what you have tried. Ask what is appropriate for your health and whether an approved treatment can meet your needs. Read about the combination ED tablet before deciding. Mendoxa quantities and costs appear below.

FAQ
What foods help you get hard fast?
The evidence reviewed here does not establish a food that reliably helps before sex. Start with the NIDDK healthy-food list for longer-term habits. For prescription timing, the Viagra (sildenafil) label says about 1 hour before sexual activity; response varies.
Does beet juice help erectile dysfunction?
The review cited here describes nitric oxide markers, not proof that beet juice improves erections. It does not establish an ED serving amount or onset time. Beets can still be part of a healthy eating pattern.
Is watermelon a natural Viagra?
Watermelon has not been established as an alternative to the prescription medicine described in the Viagra (sildenafil) label. The small citrulline study tested a supplement, not watermelon.
What are the worst foods for erectile dysfunction?
NIDDK recommends limiting saturated fats, refined carbohydrates, added sugars, sodium, packaged foods and alcohol. Think about the pattern you repeat, rather than assuming one meal explains your ED. See ED and alcohol.
What foods should I avoid with ED pills?
A high-fat meal delays sildenafil absorption by a mean of 60 minutes (Viagra (sildenafil) label). The Cialis (tadalafil) label says food does not affect tadalafil absorption, but grapefruit juice would likely increase tadalafil exposure and 5 or more units of alcohol can cause dizziness.
Can diet alone reverse ED?
Diet alone is not what the cited trial tested. In a 2-year trial of men with obesity and ED, calorie reduction plus increased activity improved sexual function in about one third of participants. That does not predict your result. Read can ED be reversed? and discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician.

How we wrote this
Written by the Mendoxa editorial team · Sources: DailyMed/FDA. Medical facts on this page come from the FDA-approved labels on DailyMed and Drugs@FDA; each drug name links to its label. We checked the linked NIH/PubMed abstracts, NIDDK guidance and DailyMed/FDA sources on Oct 28, 2026. The table distinguishes ED outcomes from sexual desire and blood markers, and trials from observational associations. Study quantities describe research, not eating targets. A trial of a supplement does not establish that its food source treats ED. Searches cannot establish that a trial does not exist; we state the limits of the sources checked.
