What Does Viagra Look Like? Brand, Generic & Fakes

Short answer

Brand Viagra is blue, film-coated and shaped like a rounded diamond, with PFIZER on one side and VGR25, VGR50 or VGR100 on the other (Viagra (sildenafil) label). Generic sildenafil varies by manufacturer: the Jubilant Cadista sildenafil label describes white oval tablets, while the Camber sildenafil label describes white round tablets.

What brand Viagra looks like

The Viagra (sildenafil) label calls the tablets “blue, film-coated, rounded-diamond-shaped tablets.” All listed strengths carry PFIZER; the VGR imprint identifies the strength. Use the table to compare both sides.

Brand vs generic vs counterfeit: sildenafil by strength

Color is a comparison point, not an authenticity test. These are named US label examples. The FDA red flags apply at every strength; they are not descriptions of a particular counterfeit tablet.

Read the entire imprint, including letters and both sides. The number alone does not identify a tablet.

What generic Viagra (sildenafil) looks like

A different manufacturer can mean a different-looking tablet. Compare the Jubilant Cadista sildenafil label and Camber sildenafil label above. FDA-approved generics must match the brand’s active ingredient, strength and dosage form and be bioequivalent; appearance alone does not establish those requirements (FDA generic drug facts for sildenafil and tadalafil).

What about white, round sildenafil 20 mg? The REVATIO (sildenafil) label is for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and describes “White to off-white, film-coated, round tablets” with RVT 20 / VLE. That is a different labeled product from Viagra; confirm the prescription with your pharmacist (Viagra (sildenafil) label).

For purchase questions, read whether sildenafil is over the counter and what to know about free Viagra samples.

What a Cialis (tadalafil) pill looks like

The Cialis (tadalafil) label describes “almond-shaped tablets” in “different sizes and different shades of yellow.” The table covers its How Supplied list, alongside one generic manufacturer; it does not cover every tadalafil product.

How to check a pill without guessing

Match three things: the bottle label, the imprint and the manufacturer’s DailyMed label. Then ask the pharmacist who filled it if anything does not line up.

  1. Read the pharmacy label. Look for the drug name, strength and manufacturer; ask the pharmacy for any missing details.
  2. Find that manufacturer’s label on DailyMed. Compare the color, shape and imprint with the How Supplied section; for brand sildenafil use the Viagra (sildenafil) label.
  3. Ask the pharmacist. FDA lists a licensed pharmacist on staff as a sign of a safe pharmacy (FDA online pharmacy tips).

NLM retired Pillbox in January 2021 and notes that DailyMed and MedlinePlus “do not provide pill identification” (NLM). A matching imprint only shows the tablet resembles the real one; it cannot prove what is inside.

Fake Viagra: red flags FDA lists

No visual check can prove what is inside. FDA says counterfeit medicines can have incorrect ingredients or an incorrect amount of active drug (FDA counterfeit medicine guidance). Compare the labeled appearance in the Viagra (sildenafil) label, then verify the source.

Check the seller as well as the tablet: FDA flags missing prescriptions, missing pharmacy licensing, no pharmacist to answer questions, suspicious discounts and damaged or expired packaging (FDA online pharmacy guidance). Use FDA BeSafeRx to check pharmacy information.

FDA also warns about sexual-enhancement products marketed as supplements or natural treatments; absence from its notification list does not establish safety (FDA sexual-enhancement notifications). Read our guides to Rhino pills and Green Lumber.

Mendoxa’s product is distinct from brand or generic Viagra: it is a compounded 3-in-1 rapid-dissolve tablet containing sildenafil, tadalafil and apomorphine, and it is not FDA-approved. The Viagra (sildenafil) label, Cialis (tadalafil) label and APOKYN (apomorphine) label concern separate products; they do not establish the safety or effectiveness of this combination.

Use the visit to discuss whether an FDA-approved medicine or a compounded option fits your needs. Read about the compounded combination ED tablet; prices below apply if prescribed. FDA distinguishes compounded medicines from approved generics.

Mendoxa ED plans and prices

The Mendoxa ED tablet is a compounded rapid-dissolve tablet with sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra), tadalafil (the active ingredient in Cialis) and apomorphine (APOKYN label). It dissolves under the tongue. A licensed clinician decides if it fits you and selects the strength. Compounded medicines are not FDA-approved.

FAQ

Is generic Viagra blue?

Not necessarily. The Jubilant Cadista sildenafil label and Camber sildenafil label both describe white tablets. FDA says approved generics have the same active ingredient and strength as the brand and are bioequivalent (FDA generic drug facts).

What does VGR100 on a pill mean?

VGR100 marks the 100 mg brand Viagra tablet, with “PFIZER” on the other side; VGR25 and VGR50 mark the 25 mg and 50 mg tablets (Viagra (sildenafil) label). A tablet with this imprint but a different color or shape should be checked by a pharmacist.

Why is my sildenafil white, round and 20 mg?

The REVATIO (sildenafil) label describes white to off-white round 20 mg tablets marked RVT 20 / VLE and labels the product for PAH. Other manufacturers have different imprints. Check your own label and ask the pharmacist what was prescribed; the REVATIO (sildenafil) label tells patients not to combine it with Viagra or other PDE5 inhibitors.

What does a Cialis pill look like?

Brand Cialis is a yellow, almond-shaped tablet debossed “C 5”, “C 10” or “C 20” (Cialis (tadalafil) label). Generic tadalafil differs by maker; the Teva tadalafil label describes pale yellow oval tablets marked 09, 10 or 11.

How can I tell if my Viagra is fake?

You often cannot tell by looking. FDA flags medicine that looks different from your usual refill, damaged or foreign-language packaging, no prescription requirement and prices that seem too good to be true (FDA online pharmacy tips). Counterfeits may contain the wrong ingredient or none at all (FDA counterfeit medicine).

Can I identify Viagra by color alone?

No. Use the imprint, manufacturer and labeled description together: compare the Viagra (sildenafil) label with the Jubilant Cadista sildenafil label. A visual match cannot verify ingredients; FDA warns that counterfeit medicines can contain incorrect ingredients or amounts (FDA counterfeit medicine guidance). Ask the dispensing pharmacist if you are unsure.
