Why gas-station and online “OTC” ED pills are risky
A supplement on a shelf is not proof that its contents match its label. The FDA sexual-enhancement notification list warns that products marketed for sexual enhancement may contain dangerous hidden ingredients; it also says absence from the list does not establish safety.

The FDA notice on hidden sildenafil warns that it can interact with nitrates such as nitroglycerin and lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. That is why “natural” packaging is no substitute for knowing the ingredients and having a prescription assessment.

What to tell the provider before your ED visit
Bring a complete list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements, as the generic sildenafil label instructs. Use the visit to explain what you have already tried and ask which product is appropriate.
- Nitrates or riociguat: sildenafil is contraindicated with organic nitrates or nitrites and with riociguat, per the Viagra (sildenafil) label.
- Heart health: the Viagra (sildenafil) label says not to use sildenafil if sexual activity is inadvisable because of cardiovascular status.
- Other medicines: the generic sildenafil label warns that alpha-blockers and blood-pressure medicines can increase the risk of low blood pressure with sildenafil.
When to seek urgent help
Get emergency treatment for an erection lasting more than 4 hours, per the Viagra (sildenafil) label. Stop sildenafil and seek care for sudden vision loss or a sudden decrease or loss of hearing, per the same Viagra (sildenafil) label.

Why the UK answer is different: Viagra Connect
The UK MHRA announcement reclassified Viagra Connect as a pharmacy medicine in November 2017; a later MHRA announcement confirms pharmacy availability since 2018. This UK decision does not change the US prescription status on the Viagra (sildenafil) label.

Check the pharmacy before buying online
Use all four checks in FDA BeSafeRx:
- It requires a prescription.
- It gives a US physical address and telephone number.
- It has a licensed pharmacist available for questions.
- It is licensed with a state board of pharmacy.
Do not treat a low price or a familiar-looking bottle as a replacement for these checks. For sildenafil specifically, the generic sildenafil label establishes prescription status; FDA BeSafeRx identifies no-prescription sales as a warning sign.

FAQ
Can you buy Viagra over the counter at Walmart or another US pharmacy?
No—Viagra is prescription-only regardless of the US retailer: the Viagra (sildenafil) label says “Rx only.” Generic sildenafil also requires a prescription, per the generic sildenafil label.
Is there an over-the-counter pill that works like Viagra?
An “OTC Viagra” claim does not establish that a product contains a safe, effective alternative. The FDA sexual-enhancement warnings describe hidden ingredients in products sold as supplements; the US Viagra (sildenafil) label remains prescription-only.
Is Viagra over the counter in the UK?
Viagra Connect has been available through UK pharmacies since 2018, per MHRA, following a pharmacist discussion under the Viagra Connect reclassification. US Viagra still requires a prescription under the Viagra (sildenafil) label.
Are gas-station ED pills or Rhino products safe if they are not on the FDA list?
Absence from the FDA notification list does not mean a product is safe. FDA found hidden tadalafil in FDA: hidden tadalafil in Rhino Choco VIP Chocolate for Men; that notice warns of a dangerous blood-pressure interaction with nitrates.
Can I get sildenafil online without an office visit?
