Can Steroids Cause ED? Anabolic Steroids vs Prednisone

Short answer

Yes—anabolic steroids can suppress your own testosterone production, and ED and low libido have been reported after stopping (NIDA; Rasmussen 2016; AndroGel (testosterone) label). Prednisone is a different drug class: the prednisone tablets label lists sperm changes but does not list ED or impotence, so tell your prescriber about erection changes before changing treatment.

How anabolic steroids can cause ED

Anabolic steroids can turn down the brain-to-testes signal that drives testosterone production. This is called suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis; NIDA describes disrupted hormone production and reduced testicular function, and the AndroGel (testosterone) label describes hypogonadism and decreased libido after withdrawal from testosterone misuse.

In Rasmussen 2016, former users reported more erectile problems and reduced desire than controls; the study does not prove that every erection problem after a cycle is hormonal. FDA warning on testosterone-like bodybuilding steroids also identifies sexual dysfunction among reactions associated with steroid-containing bodybuilding products. Start with low testosterone and ED, then consider the broader causes of ED.

Steroid types compared: hormones and erections

Identify the steroid before assuming the cause. Anabolic steroids resemble testosterone; prednisone is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid; prescribed testosterone has specific replacement indications (NIDA; prednisone tablets label; AndroGel (testosterone) label).

Inhaled and topical corticosteroids are not rated here: the sources reviewed do not establish their effect on erections.

Will erections come back after stopping steroids?

Recovery is possible, but these studies cannot give you a deadline or a permanent-ED rate. NIDA describes steroid-related low testosterone as potentially reversible; the AndroGel (testosterone) label notes that withdrawal after testosterone misuse can last weeks or months.

Do not turn “years after stopping” into “years of continuous ED.” The case-control study assessed men at one point; it did not track each man from his last cycle to recovery. Discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician; see can ED be reversed?

Does prednisone cause ED?

The prednisone label does not list ED or impotence; that does not rule out a treatment-related problem. The prednisone tablets label lists increased or decreased sperm number and motility, mood changes and insomnia. Sperm changes and erection difficulty are different outcomes.

The MedlinePlus prednisone page separately lists decreased sexual desire; the prednisone tablets label discusses hypogonadism in its long-term glucocorticoid precautions. In MacAdams 1986, testosterone was reduced in 14 of 16 older men receiving chronic glucocorticoids for lung disease. That small study does not establish a short prednisone course’s effect on erections.

Contact the prescriber before stopping or changing prednisone. The prednisone tablets label warns against abrupt discontinuation without medical supervision because adrenal insufficiency can follow withdrawal.

Can you take Cialis or Viagra with prednisone or after a cycle?

The labels do not establish that this combination is safe for you. Neither the Viagra (sildenafil) label nor the Cialis (tadalafil) label names prednisone or an anabolic-steroid cycle; absence from a label is not a prednisone-specific safety study.

The prednisone tablets label calls glucocorticoids moderate CYP3A4 inducers. The Cialis (tadalafil) label says CYP3A4 inducers can reduce tadalafil exposure; the Viagra (sildenafil) label says enzyme inducers may increase sildenafil clearance. This is a reason for a medication review, not proof of a measured prednisone interaction: these labels do not quantify prednisone’s effect on either ED drug.

After a cycle, ask about the erection problem and hormone evaluation separately. The Viagra (sildenafil) label calls for assessment of underlying causes before treatment. Read ED medication options and whether TRT helps ED to prepare your questions.

When to see a clinician

Arrange an assessment when erection problems persist, recur, or begin during prescribed steroid treatment. Bring the names and timing of steroids, supplements and other medicines, along with any lab results. NIDDK’s diagnosis guide describes a review of medical, sexual and mental health history, examination and tests; the Viagra (sildenafil) label also requires a medical assessment of underlying causes.

Discuss reduced desire, fertility concerns and mood changes as well as erections: the AndroGel (testosterone) label describes hypogonadism and depression after testosterone misuse, while FDA warning on testosterone-like bodybuilding steroids identifies sexual dysfunction and testicular shrinkage with steroid-containing products. Seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm; NIDA warns that withdrawal depression can be dangerous.

Safety checks before ED medication

Do not add another ED medicine to an existing treatment on your own: the Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label say combinations with other PDE5 inhibitors or ED therapies have not been studied and advise against such use. See ED medication and nitrates for more detail.

If ED is the problem you want treated now

Start the online ED visit with your steroid history ready. Tell the provider about prescribed prednisone, anabolic steroids, supplements and any ongoing hormone evaluation. Independent licensed providers assess suitability. Prescription required. The Viagra (sildenafil) label calls for assessment of underlying causes before ED treatment.

Mendoxa offers a compounded rapid-dissolve tablet containing sildenafil, tadalafil and apomorphine. It is not FDA-approved. The Viagra (sildenafil) label, Cialis (tadalafil) label and APOKYN (apomorphine) label concern separate products; they do not establish the safety or effectiveness of this combination.

Ask whether the compounded combination ED tablet is appropriate for your needs and how your steroid history affects that decision. The table below shows costs if prescribed.

FAQ

What are the withdrawal symptoms of steroids?

After anabolic-steroid misuse, NIDA lists fatigue, restlessness, appetite loss, insomnia, reduced sex drive and cravings, and highlights depression. The AndroGel (testosterone) label describes similar symptoms lasting weeks or months after testosterone misuse. Prednisone withdrawal is different: the prednisone tablets label warns of adrenal insufficiency and against abrupt discontinuation.

What is the main cause of erectile dysfunction?

There is no single cause for everyone. NIDDK identifies blood vessel, nerve and hormone conditions, medicines, emotional factors and lifestyle behaviors. The Viagra (sildenafil) label calls for assessment of underlying causes; steroid use is information to share, not a diagnosis by itself.

How do corticosteroids affect testosterone levels?

Chronic glucocorticoid treatment was associated with lower testosterone in a small study of older men with lung disease (MacAdams 1986). The prednisone tablets label discusses hypogonadism in long-term treatment precautions. These findings do not predict the effect of a short course.

Can ED be reversed naturally after a steroid cycle?

Recovery without treatment cannot be promised. NIDA describes steroid-related low testosterone as potentially reversible, but Rasmussen 2016 found erection problems in some former users years after stopping; the AndroGel (testosterone) label documents withdrawal-related hypogonadism. Read can ED be reversed? and discuss ongoing symptoms with a clinician.

Does prednisone cause ED or impotence?

Neither ED nor impotence appears in the prednisone tablets label reviewed here. It lists sperm changes, while MedlinePlus prednisone information lists decreased sexual desire. A label omission does not exclude a problem; tell your prescriber about new symptoms before changing treatment.

Can you take Cialis or Viagra with prednisone or after a cycle?

A prescriber must assess your medicines and health. The prednisone tablets label describes CYP3A4 induction, and the Cialis (tadalafil) label and Viagra (sildenafil) label describe enzyme-inducer effects on drug exposure or clearance. They do not provide prednisone-specific interaction measurements or a post-cycle protocol; do not treat that omission as clearance to combine medicines.
