Is baking soda good for ED? What a PubMed search shows
Can baking soda help ED? Not according to published research. On Oct 31, 2026 we searched PubMed for (baking soda OR sodium bicarbonate) AND erectile dysfunction. Our saved search found no trial of this home remedy. None gave men baking soda to drink, or to apply, and measured their erections.
Two of the records involved men already using injected ED medicine. Researchers added sodium bicarbonate to the injection to reduce penile pain: a 1993 study reported less pain, while a 1996 study found it did not alleviate pain. That is a drug-formulation detail, not evidence that a glass of baking soda water improves erections.
The sodium bicarbonate Drug Facts label lists antacid and skin-protectant uses, not treatment for ED.
The popular theory says baking soda “alkalizes” the body and boosts nitric oxide, the signaling molecule involved in erections. We found no human study supporting that chain for ED. The baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) Drug Facts label lists only antacid and skin-protectant uses. For how nitric oxide really fits in, see nitric oxide and ED.
Baking soda for erectile dysfunction reviews: what counts as evidence?
Look for an ED trial, not a recipe or a personal success story. A useful review should identify what was tested, whether there was a comparison group, and whether the outcome was better erections. The injection-pain studies above do not answer whether drinking baking soda works.
LifeWell MD also reports no human clinical trials supporting the trick (LifeWell MD). For the amount of sodium involved, use the product’s sodium bicarbonate Drug Facts label, rather than assuming a kitchen ingredient is suitable for daily ED treatment.
If you have been testing recipes because erections keep failing, bring that history to your visit. NIDDK lists health conditions and medicines among ED causes; our causes of ED guide helps you prepare questions.
Baking soda and ED claims vs. the evidence
Each viral claim, checked against a primary source. The right-hand column links the document we read.
| Claim | What the evidence says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| “Drink baking soda in water for stronger erections” | No study in our PubMed search tested it. The label lists antacid and skin uses; ½ teaspoon contains 656 mg sodium. | PubMed search; baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) Drug Facts label |
| “Baking soda raises nitric oxide and blood flow” | No human ED study found. The relevant trials studied injection pain, not a baking soda drink. | Moriel 1993; Godschalk 1996 |
| “Baking soda and Vaseline on the penis” | No trial in our search tested this topical mixture for ED. Petroleum-jelly injection case series concern a different route; they do not establish the risks of rubbing it on skin. | Marín-Martínez 2023; Dellis 2018 |
| “Brazilian Viagra” (catuaba-type bark recipes) | Review: several species are sold as “catuaba,” leading to adulterations; more research is required. Of 14 commercial samples, more than half were adulterated. | Teixeira 2024; Kletter 2004 |
| “Natural Viagra” supplements, honeys and gummies | FDA says many sexual enhancement products are likely contaminated with dangerous hidden ingredients and are sometimes sold as all-natural. Approved sildenafil is described in the Viagra (sildenafil) label. | FDA sexual enhancement notifications |

Sodium bicarbonate risks: sodium, alkalosis and stomach rupture
Baking soda is safe in cooking but can be poisonous in large amounts (MedlinePlus: baking soda overdose). The over-the-counter baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) Drug Facts label sets limits that the ED “trick” does not mention.
| Risk | What the source says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sodium load | 656 mg sodium per ½ teaspoon; ask a doctor first if you are on a sodium-restricted diet. FDA’s Daily Value for sodium is less than 2,300 mg. | baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) Drug Facts label; FDA: sodium in your diet |
| Labeled maximum | Antacid use: no more than seven ½ teaspoons in 24 hours, or three if you are over 60; do not use the maximum for more than 2 weeks. | baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) Drug Facts label |
| Stomach injury | Label STOMACH WARNING: do not take until completely dissolved or when overly full from food or drink. A review found 10 published stomach-rupture cases linked to sodium bicarbonate, which it calls very rare. | baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) Drug Facts label; Han 2022 |
| Metabolic alkalosis | Excess intake can cause metabolic alkalosis, low potassium and high sodium; reported presentations include seizures, abnormal heart rhythms and cardiopulmonary arrest. | Fitzgibbons and Snoey 1999; sodium bicarbonate Drug Facts label |
| Overdose symptoms | Include convulsions, diarrhea, muscle spasms, muscle weakness and vomiting; call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222. | MedlinePlus; sodium bicarbonate Drug Facts label |
| Heart, kidney and medicine issues | Tell your doctor about high blood pressure, heart failure or kidney disease; take it at least 2 hours apart from other medicines. The label says to ask before use if you take a prescription drug. | MedlinePlus: sodium bicarbonate; baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) Drug Facts label |
Case reports identify possible harms; they cannot tell us how often these events occur among people who drink baking soda.

Already using a prescription medicine? The sodium bicarbonate Drug Facts label says to ask a doctor or pharmacist before use because antacids may interact with prescription drugs. Bring your full medicine list to the ED visit; see ED and blood pressure.
Baking soda and Vaseline: is it safe for a private area?
No study shows that rubbing baking soda and Vaseline on the penis improves erections (our PubMed search found none). The baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) Drug Facts label does include a skin paste and soak for minor irritation and itching, with warnings: do not get it in the eyes, soaking too long may overdry skin, and stop and ask a doctor if the condition worsens.
Applying a mixture and injecting it are different exposures. Published case series describe masses requiring surgery after petroleum jelly or paraffin was injected into the penis (Marín-Martínez; Dellis). Those reports do not test topical baking soda and Vaseline; the sodium bicarbonate Drug Facts label provides no ED use.
Brazilian Viagra: what is known about catuaba
We found no authoritative definition of “Brazilian Viagra.” For catuaba-type recipes, the relevant research concerns Brazilian plants used traditionally for sexual dysfunction. A 2024 review of native Brazilian plants found that several different species are sold as “catuaba,” leading to adulterations, and concluded that further research is required; its evidence is from traditional use and animal or laboratory studies.
An analysis of 14 commercial catuaba samples found that only a minority contained the bark named on the label, and the tested extracts had no effect on rabbit erectile tissue in the laboratory. It is not Viagra: approved sildenafil has its own Viagra (sildenafil) label.
Homemade Viagra and “natural Viagra” products
“Homemade Viagra” is a recipe name, not evidence that the recipe works. For packaged sexual-enhancement products, FDA warns about dangerous hidden ingredients and misleading all-natural claims. Its notification list covers only a small fraction of contaminated products.
A hidden prescription drug is a problem because you cannot screen for it. The Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label state that the drugs are contraindicated with nitrates; an undisclosed dose removes that check. See rhino pills and supplements for ED for more.
What has evidence for ED instead
Prescription PDE5 inhibitors have placebo-controlled trial data in their FDA labels. Viagra showed statistically significant improvement over placebo in all 21 randomized trials, involving more than 3,000 men (Viagra (sildenafil) label). Cialis was evaluated in 22 clinical trials involving over 4,000 patients and was shown to improve erectile function (Cialis (tadalafil) label).
Lifestyle changes also have support. NIDDK lists quitting smoking, limiting alcohol, more physical activity, a healthy weight and healthy eating, and advises talking to a health professional before trying supplements or alternative medicine (NIDDK: ED treatment).
Start with exercise for ED and foods for erections. For a wider list of non-drug ideas, see home remedies for ED.
What each path includes
Choose your next step by what you need help with today. If erections keep failing, the online ED visit is the direct route to assessment and, if appropriate, a prescription.
| Your priority | Starting point | What to discuss |
|---|---|---|
| I want to keep trying home remedies | NIDDK lifestyle guidance; home remedies for ED | Exercise, weight, alcohol and smoking. Discuss changes you can sustain; the sodium bicarbonate Drug Facts label lists no ED use. |
| I already drank baking soda and feel unwell | Poison Help 1-800-222-1222 or 911 (MedlinePlus) | Product, amount swallowed, time and symptoms; see the sodium bicarbonate Drug Facts label for its stomach warning. |
| I want to understand recurring ED | Clinical assessment | Symptoms, medicines, blood pressure, diabetes and mood, rather than assuming one cause. |
| I want to discuss an ED prescription | Online visit or an in-person clinician; Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label | Which treatment fits your health and current medicines. Prescription required. |
| I want to know whether Mendoxa fits | Mendoxa online ED visit | Independent licensed providers assess suitability; the compounded tablet is not FDA-approved. |

Safety checks before ED medication
- Sildenafil and tadalafil are contraindicated with organic nitrates or riociguat (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- An erection lasting more than 4 hours needs immediate medical care (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- Stop and seek care for sudden vision loss or sudden decrease or loss of hearing (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- Common adverse effects include headache and flushing with sildenafil, and headache, indigestion and back pain with tadalafil (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
- The APOKYN (apomorphine) label contraindicates use with 5HT3 antagonists such as ondansetron and warns about nausea and fainting.
Give the prescriber your full medicine list. See ED medication and nitrates for more detail.

FAQ
Is baking soda any good for erectile dysfunction?
No clinical evidence supports it. Our PubMed search dated Oct 31, 2026 found no trial testing drinking or applying baking soda for ED. Online reviews do not supply that missing evidence.
How much baking soda should I take for ED?
There is no established baking soda dose for ED. The sodium bicarbonate Drug Facts label gives directions for antacid use, not erections; its maximums should not be read as an ED regimen.
Is baking soda safe for a private area?
An ED benefit has not been demonstrated. The sodium bicarbonate Drug Facts label lists certain minor skin irritations, not genital ED treatment, and warns that prolonged soaking may overdry skin. Those skin uses do not validate a baking soda and Vaseline erection recipe.
Can beet root powder help with erectile dysfunction?
Research on blood vessels does not by itself establish an ED benefit. A 2026 beetroot-powder trial measured cardiovascular and endothelial outcomes in healthy adults, not erection outcomes. See foods for erections for the broader food discussion.
Can I take baking soda with Viagra or Cialis?
Neither label reports a sodium bicarbonate study; their antacid data concern magnesium/aluminum hydroxide (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label). MedlinePlus advises taking sodium bicarbonate at least 2 hours apart from other medicines, so ask your prescriber or pharmacist (MedlinePlus). Check the sodium bicarbonate Drug Facts label with your pharmacist as well.
How can I stay hard longer naturally?
NIDDK lists more physical activity, a healthy weight, healthy eating, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol (NIDDK). See exercise for ED; if erections still fail, discuss treatment with a clinician.

How we wrote this
Written by the Mendoxa editorial team · Sources: DailyMed/FDA. Medical facts on this page come from the FDA-approved labels on DailyMed and Drugs@FDA; each drug name links to its label. We checked the saved PubMed search dated Oct 31, 2026, its abstracts, NIH information and product labels. We distinguish drinking, topical application and injection because evidence from one route does not establish effects by another. The search found no trial testing drinking or applying baking soda for ED; this is a search finding, not proof that every possible study has been captured. Trial figures for approved drugs concern separate products and do not establish the safety or effectiveness of Mendoxa’s compounded combination.
