Sublingual medication for erectile dysfunction
A sublingual ED tablet dissolves under the tongue instead of being swallowed. Staxyn, a vardenafil tablet, has an FDA label for a tablet that disintegrates on the tongue. Mendoxa's compounded rapid-dissolve tablet combines sildenafil, tadalafil and apomorphine, from $129 a month if prescribed.

What the FDA dissolving-tablet label says
The Staxyn label says to place the tablet on the tongue, let it disintegrate, and take it without liquid. When it was swallowed with water, vardenafil exposure fell by 29%. It also says Staxyn is not interchangeable with 10 mg vardenafil film-coated tablets (Levitra), because it gives higher systemic exposure. Format changes the dose. That is why a clinician sets the strength.

Sublingual sildenafil and chewable sildenafil
The Viagra label describes a film-coated tablet taken by mouth. It does not describe chewing or dissolving it, and gives no onset for those uses. Compounded chewables and sublinguals, such as BlueChew Gold or Rugiet Ready, are prepared for individual patients and have no FDA label. We do not print an onset time for them.

Safety does not change with the format
The Viagra and Cialis labels list the same hard stops. Do not use them with organic nitrates in any form, or with a guanylate cyclase stimulator such as riociguat. Do not use them if sex is inadvisable because of your heart. Get emergency care for an erection that lasts more than 4 hours. Stop and get care for a sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, or a sudden decrease or loss of hearing.
The FDA says compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, and that the FDA does not verify their safety, effectiveness or quality before they are marketed. That applies to the Mendoxa tablet and to every other compounded ED product on this page.
FAQ
Is there a sublingual ED medication?
Yes. Staxyn (vardenafil) is an FDA-labeled orally disintegrating tablet. Compounded sublingual tablets, such as Mendoxa's, are prescribed but not FDA-approved.
Can I chew or dissolve a Viagra tablet?
The Viagra label describes swallowing a film-coated tablet and does not cover chewing or dissolving it. Ask the clinician before changing how you take any tablet.
Is a dissolving tablet the same dose as a swallowed one?
Not necessarily. The Staxyn label says it is not interchangeable with the 10 mg swallowed vardenafil tablet because exposure is higher.
How much is the Mendoxa sublingual tablet?
$129 for 1 month, or about $7.48 per tablet on the 3-month plan with 20 tablets per month (60 tablets total), if prescribed.
