Oral minoxidil is not topical minoxidil
Oral minoxidil and topical minoxidil are not the same product. The oral tablet label we opened, Loniten, is for severe hypertension that other drugs have not controlled. It warns of pericardial effusion and says it can worsen angina. Hair growth on that label is a side effect, reported by about 8 in 10 patients, not the approved reason to take it.
What the oral label is actually for
Position 1 on 2026-10-16 is a JAMA Dermatology paper. We did not open it, so we do not borrow its conclusion. We also do not print a topical dose. Topical minoxidil is a different product.
| Oral minoxidil label we opened | Topical minoxidil | |
|---|---|---|
| Approved use on that file | Hypertension not controlled by a diuretic plus two other drugs. Not recommended for milder hypertension. | Not this label. We do not sell a topical on the strength of the Loniten file. |
| Strengths on that label | 2.5 mg and 10 mg tablets. | Not printed here. |
| Hair | About 8 in 10 patients noticed darker or longer fine hair, often at 3 to 6 weeks. It is not permanent. It can be bothersome. | A different product. A clinician decides if any minoxidil fits. |
| Serious warnings | Pericardial effusion, sometimes tamponade. Angina may worsen. Fluid retention. Faster heart rate. | Do not assume the topical warnings are these warnings, or the reverse. |
A compounded oral minoxidil tablet for hair is not Loniten, and it is not FDA-approved as a finished hair product. The clinician can say no. Read oral minoxidil before you start a visit.
