Mendoxa / Finasteride and minoxidil
Hair · GuideFinasteride and minoxidil: why they're used together
Finasteride and minoxidil treat hair loss in different ways, which is why clinicians often use them together. Finasteride lowers DHT, the hormone that shrinks hair follicles in male pattern hair loss. Minoxidil supports the hair growth phase. Results take months, and both medicines need a clinician's review for side effects.
Why combine finasteride and minoxidil
One slows the cause and the other supports regrowth. That is the reason clinicians sometimes use both. It is not proof that every combination beats either drug alone.
In male pattern hair loss, DHT gradually shrinks follicles until they stop producing thick hair. A 2025 systematic review in Frontiers in Medicine of seven randomized trials found a topical minoxidil-finasteride solution worked better than topical minoxidil alone. That review is not about an oral tablet, so it does not prove a dissolving tablet. The authors call for larger studies. Evidence that a combination beats finasteride alone is weaker. Not every patient needs both, and the clinician decides.
What finasteride does
Finasteride blocks the enzyme that turns testosterone into DHT. Lower DHT slows follicle shrinkage.
Finasteride 1 mg is the FDA-approved brand-product dose for male pattern hair loss, and a compounded combination is not FDA-approved as a finished product. It is for men. Women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets, according to the label. Finasteride lowers PSA test results, so tell any clinician who orders one. See the finasteride prescribing information on DailyMed.
What minoxidil does
Minoxidil lengthens the hair growth phase and may increase blood flow to follicles. It can be topical or oral.
Early shedding can happen. Oral use can cause unwanted body hair. Topical minoxidil is sold over the counter, and oral minoxidil needs a prescription. Our guide to oral minoxidil goes into detail.
Side effects, including sexual side effects
Finasteride can cause lower libido, erection problems or changes in ejaculation in a small share of men. Minoxidil's side effects are mostly unwanted hair growth, swelling or a fast heartbeat.
The finasteride label also lists mood changes and depression, reported after the drug reached the market. Report any side effect to your clinician, and do not stop or change treatment on your own without that conversation.
What to expect over time
Expect to wait several months before judging results. Stopping usually means the benefit fades over time.
Take photos in consistent light to track change. Consistency matters more than any single dose. Keep follow-up appointments with the clinician.
Finasteride online: getting it prescribed
You can get finasteride online through a licensed clinician who reviews your health history first. Mendoxa offers that review in 49 states (not California).
The intake asks about your health, medications and hair loss pattern. Be careful with sellers that skip the prescription. A prescription is never automatic. LocumTele clinicians review every intake, and Rush Pharmacy fills when a prescription is issued.
The combined formula at Mendoxa
When appropriate, a clinician can prescribe a compounded formula that combines finasteride and minoxidil. The clinician sets the strength.
The minoxidil in Mendoxa's hair formulas is an oral dissolving tablet that includes minoxidil, with the dose chosen by the clinician. It is not FDA-approved as a finished product. The alternative is a dutasteride formula; see dutasteride for hair loss.
Two labels, not one stacked dose
Propecia is finasteride 1 mg once daily for male pattern hair loss in men only. Loniten is a hypertension tablet. A compounded tablet that combines them is not those two products taken together on your own.
| What we opened | What it means on this page |
|---|---|

| Sexual reactions, year 1 | Decreased libido 1.8 percent, erectile dysfunction 1.3 percent, ejaculation disorder 1.2 percent. Placebo was lower. |
| Minoxidil oral label | Not a hair licence. Hair growth there is a side effect. |
