Is Cialis Over the Counter? US vs UK Rules (Oct 2026)

Short answer

No—Cialis (tadalafil) is prescription-only in the US; the Cialis (tadalafil) label says “Rx only,” and there is no FDA-approved OTC tadalafil. UK headlines refer to Cialis Together, a pharmacy medicine subject to pharmacist assessment; for US access, start with a prescription visit.

Can you get Cialis over the counter in the USA?

You need a prescription for both brand Cialis and generic tadalafil. The Cialis (tadalafil) label is marked “Rx only,” as is the generic tadalafil label. An online visit is a route to assessment, not an OTC purchase.

Want to understand the medicine before choosing a visit? Read the tadalafil guide or generic Cialis guide. For the separate Viagra question, see sildenafil over the counter (Viagra (sildenafil) label).

Cialis over-the-counter status: US vs UK

UK pharmacy access does not change US prescription rules. The MHRA announcement permits a specific pharmacy product, if marketed; it does not establish stock at any pharmacy.

Why US stores don’t sell Cialis off the shelf

The label still requires a prescriber’s check. The Cialis (tadalafil) label contraindicates tadalafil with “any form of organic nitrate” and with riociguat. It says not to use it “if sex is inadvisable due to cardiovascular status.” Those are questions a clinician answers before prescribing; see ED medication and nitrates.

A supplement is not an OTC version of Cialis. FDA warns that sexual-enhancement products can contain hidden drugs (FDA sexual-enhancement notifications). On February 11, 2026, it reported undeclared tadalafil in Rhino Choco VIP Chocolate for Men and warned of potentially dangerous blood-pressure drops with nitrates (FDA warning about hidden tadalafil).

Absence from FDA’s list does not establish safety: the agency says it identifies only a fraction of contaminated products (FDA notifications). See rhino pills and supplements for ED.

Can a US resident buy UK Cialis Together?

The UK pharmacy classification is not permission to import it into the US. FDA says personal importation of drugs is illegal in most circumstances (FDA personal importation guidance). For US treatment, prescription required: Cialis (tadalafil) label.

In the US, tadalafil is prescription-only (Cialis (tadalafil) label). FDA’s BeSafeRx checklist lists the signs of a safe online pharmacy. It always requires a doctor’s prescription and gives a physical US address and phone number. It has a licensed pharmacist to answer questions and is licensed with a state board of pharmacy. A website that sells “Cialis” with no prescription fails the first test.

Safety checks before ED medication

Do not combine ED medicines on your own: the Cialis (tadalafil) label says not to take it “with other PDE5 inhibitors, including ADCIRCA.” For timing questions, see how long Cialis lasts.

FAQ

Can you buy Cialis over the counter at Walgreens, CVS or Walmart?

No. Cialis and generic tadalafil require a prescription in the US (Cialis (tadalafil) label); this applies regardless of which pharmacy you use. This is a statement about drug status, not individual store stock or service policies.

Is generic tadalafil over the counter?

No. Generic tadalafil carries a prescription label too; the Teva generic tadalafil label on DailyMed is a “HUMAN PRESCRIPTION DRUG LABEL” marked “Rx only.” See generic Cialis.

Is Cialis over the counter in the UK?

The MHRA reclassified Cialis Together as a pharmacy medicine on March 14, 2023, for sale after pharmacist assessment, if marketed. That specific UK decision does not change the US “Rx only” status of Cialis (Cialis (tadalafil) label).

Is the “herbal Cialis” sold at gas stations the same thing?

No. Supplements are not Cialis. FDA has found undeclared tadalafil in sexual-enhancement products (FDA warning about hidden tadalafil). See supplements for ED.

Can I get Cialis without seeing a doctor in person?

You still need a prescription, but the visit can be online. FDA’s BeSafeRx says a safe online pharmacy always requires one. Mendoxa’s online visit is with Independent licensed providers for a compounded tablet (not FDA-approved). Prescription required. Brand Cialis remains prescription-only (Cialis (tadalafil) label); Mendoxa’s compounded tablet is a different product.

Will Cialis become available over the counter in the US?

As of Oct 30, 2026, FDA’s Rx-to-nonprescription switch list has no tadalafil entry, and the Cialis (tadalafil) label remains “Rx only.” We found no FDA source announcing a switch.

Written by the Mendoxa editorial team · Sources: DailyMed/FDA. Medical facts on this page come from the FDA-approved labels on DailyMed and Drugs@FDA; each drug name links to its label. We checked the saved source texts and re-opened the linked regulator and label pages on Oct 30, 2026. The country table describes the MHRA reclassification decision, not current pharmacy stock. US store answers use prescription labeling rather than unverified retailer policies. Ingredient labels describe separate approved products; they do not establish safety or effectiveness of the compounded combination.
