Eye symptoms that mean stop and get care
Stop the ED medicine and seek medical attention right away for sudden vision loss in one or both eyes, as the Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label instruct. Go to a doctor or emergency room now for intense eye pain, nausea, red eye and blurry vision, which the National Eye Institute lists as angle-closure glaucoma symptoms.
Blue-tinted vision is described as transient in the Viagra (sildenafil) label, but do not assume a new change is harmless or wait for an online visit if vision suddenly drops. Record the medicine taken and when symptoms began for the clinician.
Can Viagra cause glaucoma?
The evidence does not establish that Viagra causes glaucoma. Glaucoma is not a listed contraindication in the Viagra (sildenafil) label; its eye warning concerns sudden vision loss that may signal NAION, an optic-nerve condition that can cause permanent loss of vision.
The September 2026 UK study associated ED medication use with open-angle glaucoma; the authors suggested shared vascular mechanisms rather than a direct drug effect. The AJO cohort found a lower hazard with chronic PDE5-inhibitor use, so neither headline settles your personal risk (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
Glaucoma often starts without symptoms, according to the National Eye Institute. For your visit, bring your eye diagnoses and medicine list; our guides to ED and diabetes and ED and blood pressure can help organize other questions.
Can you take Viagra or Cialis if you have glaucoma?
Glaucoma is not listed as a contraindication on either label, but the decision belongs to your prescriber and eye doctor. The Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label contraindicate nitrates and riociguat; neither lists glaucoma there. Both ask about prior severe vision loss and retinitis pigmentosa.
- Retinitis pigmentosa: the Viagra (sildenafil) label has no controlled data and advises caution; the Cialis (tadalafil) label did not study these patients and does not recommend use.
- Previous NAION: use only when benefits outweigh risks (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label).
Bring your glaucoma type, eye-drop names and last eye-pressure reading to the visit. Our sildenafil guide and sildenafil vs tadalafil compare the two medicines using the Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label.
Bring this checklist: your glaucoma type, latest eye-exam report, previous severe vision changes, every prescription and eye drop, and the name of your eye doctor. Ask whether they should coordinate with the ED prescriber before you start.
What each path includes
Match the urgency of the eye question to the right starting point. ED treatment and eye monitoring can go together; neither replaces the other.
| Your situation | Starting point | What to discuss |
|---|---|---|
| Sudden vision loss, eye pain or a red eye now | Emergency room or urgent eye care (NEI) | Stop the ED medicine; the Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label say to seek medical attention. |
| I have glaucoma or high eye pressure | Your eye doctor | Glaucoma type, recent eye pressure and your eye drops; retinitis pigmentosa limits are in the Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label. |
| I have glaucoma risk factors and want ED care | Online visit or an in-person clinician | Age, diabetes, blood pressure and family history; a dilated eye exam every 1–2 years if at higher risk (NEI). |
| I want to know whether Mendoxa fits | Mendoxa online assessment | Independent licensed providers review your eye and medical history. Prescription required; the compounded tablet is not FDA-approved. |
Sources: NEI glaucoma; Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label; FDA compounding Q&A; Mendoxa care information. Accessed Oct 24, 2026.
Before a visit, compare ED medication options. Prepare your current medicine list, eye diagnoses and when the erection problems started.

What the labels say vs what the 2026 studies found
Read the source, population and limitation together. These studies address glaucoma diagnoses; the Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label address sudden vision loss separately.
| Source and date | What it reports | What it cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| FDA labels · Viagra (rev. 08/2017) and Cialis | Eye warning is sudden vision loss (NAION), not glaucoma; reports “do not substantiate a causal relationship.” Single doses did not change intraocular pressure in label vision studies (Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label). | Long-term glaucoma risk was not the subject of these label studies. |
| BJO · Fan et al. · Sep 11, 2026 | 218,056 UK glaucoma (POAG) cases vs 876,872 controls: ED medication use OR 1.29 (CPRD Gold) and 1.17 (CPRD Aurum) (PubMed abstract). | Exposure was “ED medication use”; authors say on-demand use “suggests a vascular rather than direct pharmacological mechanism.” Label context: Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label. |
| BJO · Hsia et al. · Aug 4, 2026 | Men 40+ with urinary symptoms, 36,927 tadalafil users vs 36,927 matched non-users: glaucoma HR 1.22; 5-year incidence 3.93% vs 3.16% (PubMed abstract). | Observational; urinary-symptom population. No statistically significant association with primary angle-closure glaucoma does not establish safety. Label context: Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label. |
| AJO · Elhusseiny et al. · Apr 12, 2026 | Men aged 40+ with ED and chronic PDE5-inhibitor exposure: open-angle glaucoma adjusted HR 0.76 at 1 year and 0.84 at 3 years (PubMed abstract). | A lower hazard is an association, not evidence that ED pills prevent glaucoma. Label context: Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label. |
Sources: Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label; Fan et al., BJO; Hsia et al., BJO; Elhusseiny et al., AJO. Accessed Oct 24, 2026.
Does Viagra affect eye pressure? A visual-function evaluation in the Viagra (sildenafil) label found no effect on intraocular pressure, while increased pressure also appears among postmarketing reports; those reports do not establish causation. The Cialis (tadalafil) label reports no pressure effect in a single-dose vision study of 59 people; these observations do not resolve long-term glaucoma risk.
How to read the numbers: OR means odds ratio; HR means hazard ratio over follow-up. They are relative comparisons, not your chance of developing glaucoma, and the studies used different populations and exposure definitions. Their results cannot be treated as a head-to-head safety comparison.
Blue vision on Viagra: what the label reports
A blue tinge is a known, usually temporary label effect. The Viagra (sildenafil) label links it to sildenafil’s action on PDE6, a retinal enzyme, and describes trouble telling blue from green near peak blood levels. The Cialis (tadalafil) label reports color-vision changes as rare.
| Label and trial group | Reported rate | Description in the label |
|---|---|---|
| Viagra (sildenafil) · fixed-dose trials, 25 mg | 1% (placebo 1%) | “Abnormal vision”: mild to moderate, transient (Viagra (sildenafil) label). |
| Viagra (sildenafil) · fixed-dose trials, 50 mg | 2% (placebo 1%) | Predominantly color tinge, also light sensitivity or blurred vision (Viagra (sildenafil) label). |
| Viagra (sildenafil) · fixed-dose trials, 100 mg | 11% (placebo 1%) | Same description (Viagra (sildenafil) label). |
| Viagra (sildenafil) · flexible-dose trials | 3% (placebo 0%) | Transient color tinge, light sensitivity or blurred vision (Viagra (sildenafil) label). |
| Cialis (tadalafil) · all clinical studies | Rare (<0.1%) | Changes in color vision (Cialis (tadalafil) label). |
Sources: Viagra (sildenafil) label; Cialis (tadalafil) label. Accessed Oct 24, 2026.
These are different outcomes from different trials: the Viagra (sildenafil) label reports a broader abnormal-vision category, while the Cialis (tadalafil) label reports color-vision changes. The figures do not establish which drug is safer for glaucoma; for full lists, use our sildenafil guide, tadalafil guide and Viagra side effects guide.
Can Cialis cause blindness or vision loss?
The Cialis label warns about sudden vision loss, including permanent loss from NAION. Reports have occurred rarely after PDE5-inhibitor use, but the Cialis (tadalafil) label says reports and observational associations do not establish cause. The instruction is clear: stop and seek medical attention for sudden loss of vision.
Tell your prescriber about previous NAION or a crowded optic disc: the Cialis (tadalafil) label and Viagra (sildenafil) label identify these as concerns. See daily tadalafil for questions about ongoing treatment.
Label hard stops
Label hard stops (nitrates, riociguat, an erection over 4 hours, sudden vision or hearing loss) are listed once in our sildenafil guide, from the Viagra (sildenafil) label and Cialis (tadalafil) label.
If ED is the problem you want treated now
Use the Mendoxa online visit to explain what you want from ED treatment and flag your eye history before a prescribing decision. Independent licensed providers assess suitability. Prescription required.
The tablet combines sildenafil, tadalafil and apomorphine; it is not FDA-approved. Ingredient references are the Viagra (sildenafil) label, Cialis (tadalafil) label and APOKYN (apomorphine) label; APOKYN is an injectable Parkinson’s treatment, and its label is not approval of this ED combination. These labels do not establish the safety of the combination for people with eye disease.
Read about the combination ED tablet before your assessment. Have your medicine list and eye-care records ready so the provider can review your circumstances.

FAQ
Can Viagra cause glaucoma?
It has not been proven to do so. The 2026 observational studies point in different directions (Fan; Elhusseiny); the Viagra (sildenafil) label separately warns about sudden vision loss that needs immediate medical attention.
Can Cialis cause glaucoma?
A 2026 study of men taking tadalafil for urinary symptoms found a 1.22 hazard ratio for glaucoma, but it was observational and cannot prove cause (Hsia et al.). The Cialis (tadalafil) label does not list glaucoma as a warning; ask your eye doctor about monitoring if you have risk factors.
Can Cialis cause blindness?
Sudden vision loss from NAION has been reported rarely and can be permanent, according to the Cialis (tadalafil) label. The label says a causal link is not substantiated; stop the medicine and seek care right away if it happens.
Why does Viagra make my vision blue?
The Viagra (sildenafil) label links temporary blue/green discrimination changes to inhibition of the retinal enzyme PDE6. A blue tinge and sudden loss of vision are different label concerns; sudden vision loss means stop and get medical attention.
Does Cialis affect eye pressure?
In a single-dose study with 59 people, the Cialis (tadalafil) label reports no effect on intraocular pressure. The 2026 tadalafil study associated long-term use with ocular hypertension (HR 1.32) without proving cause (Hsia et al.).
Can I take Viagra if I have glaucoma?
Glaucoma is not a listed contraindication in the Viagra (sildenafil) label, but that does not confirm suitability for you. Tell the prescriber about glaucoma, previous NAION and retinitis pigmentosa, and bring your eye-drop and medication list.

How we wrote this
Written by the Mendoxa editorial team · Sources: DailyMed/FDA. Medical facts on this page come from the FDA-approved labels on DailyMed and Drugs@FDA; each drug name links to its label. We checked the linked DailyMed, PubMed and NEI sources on Oct 24, 2026. Study results are reported as associations with their population and date; none is presented as proof that ED pills cause or prevent glaucoma. The Viagra (sildenafil) label, Cialis (tadalafil) label and APOKYN (apomorphine) label describe separate approved products, not evidence that the compounded combination is safe or effective. The APOKYN label concerns an injection for Parkinson’s disease, not an approved ED tablet.
